2020 was an awkward year as the Covid-19 pandemic took hold. In many places there were grocery stores with empty shelves. Some Americans are spoiled people who are used to having everything. This is of course my opinion through observation. Many restaurants were shut down and people had to cook their own food. Quite a few Americans struggled having to live like many people live around the globe without restaurants available. When things do not go your way one must adapt. This year I focused more on my Mexican and German cooking, Soups, and Bean dishes, but also adapted to not having certain items readily available at the store. With this change, I was able to learn more culinary techniques, and apply them to even more delicious dishes. The one thing I am happy to see is more people learning to prepare their own food. That is a plus for 2020! Food is very important for the mind, body, and spirit. With that said, here is my 2020 year in food. Just a sampling of the 240 plus home meals I cooked this year. Bon Appetite!

The Pit Room BBQ is a little known joint in the Montrose area in Houston, Texas that serves some of the best BBQ in the state of Texas. Texas Monthly or any other publications can say what they will, but I have been eating BBQ for over 49 years, so I know excellent BBQ. The Pit Room uses oak and slowly cooks their meat to juicy perfection. Their side dishes are made with top ingredients and are full of flavor. Their service is outstanding! You want GREAT BBQ while in Houston, Texas, head on over to THE PIT ROOM http://www.thepitroombbq.com/

I have had so much BBQ in my life that I can hands down say the Pecan Lodge has a perfect balance of smoke, sauce, and tenderness to the meat. The service is excellent even when crowds wrap around the exterior. One unique thing is fried chicken on the platter instead of BBQ chicken. I have never had that at any BBQ establishment, and I must say the fried chicken is superbly crispy, seasoned, and juicy. For more on the Pecan Lodge check out their website http://www.pecanlodge.com/ This is one stop you need to make while in Dallas, Texas.

When I lived in Huntsville, Texas, I would make it a point to stop by New Zion Missionary Baptist Church for BBQ.  Even today, I make the 70 mile trek from Houston. The workers, filled with the spirit of the Lord, are always helpful and friendly.  The plates are served up with generous portions and the meat is always tender. You will not find a website, nor a menu online, because the place is small, but the BBQ is SUPER and the staff is OUTSTANDING! Then again if you’re looking for a modern, upscale feel, and urban vibe, you might hate it. This place if for spirited people with a down home love for BBQ.
