Texas Monthly or any other publications can say what they will, but I have been eating BBQ for over 49 years, so I know excellent BBQ. I have eaten so many Mexican dishes in my lifetime and I must say the food at Hugo’s Mexican Restaurant exceeded all my expectations. The service also exceeded my expectations. My group started with Chaupulines or Grasshopper tacos, and Queso Flameado which was cut and divided among four tortillas. We also had Cabrito/Goat, Barbacoa/Lamb, and Carnitas/Pork along with many great salsas and condiments. The Churros for dessert where amazing! Dulce the Leche and Chocolate! Oh, my! So awesome! I have long loved Greek Food and Olympia Grill at Pier 21 fills that need when I am relaxing down on Galveston Island. The Greek Sampler offers a great selection at a reasonable price and best of all it is delicious. Pictured here is the Taste Of Olympia platter featuring hummus, tzatziki, falafel & dolma, Greek salad, spanakopita, gyro slices, pastitsio, moussaka & vegetables. Also pictured is a dessert platter sampler. The views are outstanding and one can often see the cruise ships leave the Port of Galveston and the clipper ship Elissa. The Star Drug Store has been around for over 130 years serving Galveston Island residents. They have food, malts, shakes, and banana splits just like you would find in the 50’s. If you want nostalgia and a feeling that you have stepped back in time, or just a place to experience history, this is a must do on your bucket list. Here are a few photos from my stop. Govinda’s Vegetarian Restaurant at Hare Krishna Temple

Not long ago, I made a stop at Govinda’s Vegetarian Restaurant. The food is served buffet style and the atmosphere is casual. The location is right on sight of a Hare Krishna temple which you can visit and learn about ways that may be different from your own. My experience was excellent! From the food and it’s health properties, to touring and learning about Hare Krishna’s. My favorite hands down was the Mint Ginger Lemonade! Oh, my! It is excellent! Here are a few photos and a link to the restaurant. http://govindashou.com/#menu
Pecan Lodge BBQ

I have had so much BBQ in my life that I can hands down say the Pecan Lodge has a perfect balance of smoke, sauce, and tenderness to the meat. The service is excellent even when crowds wrap around the exterior. One unique thing is fried chicken on the platter instead of BBQ chicken. I have never had that at any BBQ establishment, and I must say the fried chicken is superbly crispy, seasoned, and juicy. For more on the Pecan Lodge check out their website http://www.pecanlodge.com/ This is one stop you need to make while in Dallas, Texas.

Ragin Cajun

Houston has a restaurant that can make your feel as if your right home in Southern Louisiana Cajun Country. This restaurant is known as Ragin Cajun. Ragin Cajun serves some of the best po-boys, red beans and rice, boudin balls, gumbo, etouffe, jambalaya, crawfish, shrimp, blue crabs, and oysters on the half-shell around. The accordion’s sing out of the speakers as Cajun music is played. The tables inside are linked together, so you get a community feel, and often find yourself talking to complete strangers. Unless your related to the Scrooge, your tongue should dance to the flavors of Ragin Cajun. For more information visit http://www.ragin-cajun.com/

Kenny and Ziggy’s

When it comes to Jewish food or N.Y. Style Deli, the only place in Houston I recommend is Kenny and Ziggy’s. You have two options, come really hungry, or take home left-overs for another day. The portions are huge and bursting with flavor! My personal favorites are Lox and Bagels, Corned Beef Hash, Cabbage Rolls, Chicken Matzo Soup, on any of the lovely sandwiches, especially the triple decker pictured below. If you still have room to eat after a great meal, you can try the foot long, about four inch wide, chocolate eclair. Let’s not forget the ten inch tall apple pie either. The deserts are magnificent.
